Cogito

A notebook that never leaves your browser.

For the writing that may not be stored in the cloud: a client's material under an agreement about where it lives, an employer whose rules keep notes off outside services.

Everything you write stays on this device — and you can check that rather than take it on trust: this app is served with a header that forbids it from opening a connection to anybody, including us. There is nothing to sign up for either: no account, no supplier, no approval.

Start writing

It opens straight into a notebook. Nothing to fill in.

What you get

  • pages laid out as a grid, not one column
  • text, tables, drawings, pictures, charts, diagrams, recordings
  • sums that the prose keeps up with
  • links, backlinks and a map of what is near what
  • a place on an atlas, so you can remember where a thing is
  • search across everything you wrote
  • exports: one page, a whole story, or the lot as a zip
  • installable, and it works with no connection at all

What it cannot do

  • the writing assistants — they are calls to a model elsewhere
  • publishing a page for others to read
  • sharing a link to anything
  • turning a recording into text
  • finding pages that are about the same thing
  • your phone and this, in step

Every one of those works by sending your writing somewhere, which is the one thing this edition may not do. They are at app.cogito.garden, and a notebook moves there in one file — for the work that is not covered by the rules.

One thing worth knowing before you start: your notebook is in this browser and nowhere else. Clearing your site data deletes it, and nobody can get it back — so take a copy now and then. The app has a button for it, and will remind you.
